Yorkshire born and bred, The Private Health Partnership Ltd (PHP) has celebrated 20 years of continuous growth within the medical insurance sector.
Established on 26 January 1989 by Managing Director Jan Lawson and now retired Peter Bye, PHP is currently one of the largest independent private medical insurance intermediaries in the UK. Today it employs 70 staff at its headquarters in Baildon and looks after over 8,300 corporate and company clients, trade associations and individuals with an annual premium income in excess of £40 million.
From humble beginnings in Horsforth, PHP has also resided in West Park, Leeds and Otley before moving to its current home in Baildon in 2007. In 1991, when in West Park, its offices were destroyed by fire so the business had to relocate to holiday cottages on the moors for six months.
A major landmark in PHP’s history was Skipton Building Society becoming a majority shareholder in 2002 giving the company an opportunity to make a series of strategic acquisitions including Medical Care Direct (MCD) in 2008. MCD provides a unique package of services aimed specifically at the self pay market where over 250,000 individuals pay upwards of £500 million in the UK each year for private medical treatment without using insurance.
Jan Lawson said, "The last 20 years have really flown by as it seems like only yesterday when Peter and I first started the business. So much has happened since PHP has been in existence, not only with the business but also within the medical insurance sector.
"When we started, products were either traditional comprehensive or clearly budget plans. Now there are lots of products and lots of choices as products have become increasingly more modular with a multiplicity of options rather than separate products for separate needs.
"I am both very proud of PHP and of our staff who have made the business what it is today and am extremely confident PHP will enjoy a further 20 years of success."
