The facts speak for themselves but what are the key drivers?

  • 11.4 million working days are lost per annum due to stress, anxiety and depression (HSE).
  • It is estimated that 27,000 cases of Cardiac Disease per annum are attributable to stress (HSE).
  • The average length of absence in a stress related case is 27.4 days (UK HSE).
  • 32% of Work Related stress cases result in an absence period which exceeds 32 days (THOR – Manchester University).
  • Stress is the single most common cause for long term absence in non-manual workers (HSE).

(Statistics above derived from Health & Safety Executive (UK) and Manchester University (UK).

Strictly Come Dancing came to Yorkshire earlier this year when 8 Directors and Managers from PHP, including Managing Director Stuart Scullion, donned their sequins and leotards to dance ‘ballroom' and ‘latin' in ‘Strictly PHP', their very own version of Strictly Come Dancing for charity.

Abigail Jones & Ross Hartley
Learning dances such as the quickstep, foxtrot, jive and cha cha, over a 12 week period, each PHP dancer teamed up with a professional partner to learn their own personal dance routine which they then performed to a paying audience.

Eventually won by Marketing Manager, Abigail Jones dancing the waltz, the event had an audience of over 180 and raised £6156 for PHP's charity of the year Leeds Children's Hospital. The money will be spent in the new Children's Out Patients department at the hospital, where distraction walls will be painted to help those children receiving treatment.

Stuart Scullion said, "This was without question one of the most daunting and scariest things I've ever done. That said, it was great fun, we had a lot of laughs (and sleepless nights) along the way. On behalf of all the dancers, a really big thank you goes to our supporters who enabled such a large sum of money to be raised for a very worthwhile cause and the individuals who actually made the event possible, especially the professional dancers who gave their time up for our crazy idea."

Looking after your health

Most of us like to think we are fit and healthy.  Society today seems to be obsessed with the food we eat and how much we weigh but have you thought about the underlying health issues that healthy eating and exercise may not solve?

A health screening can identify the key risks related to heart disease and give advice on how a change in lifestyle can help prevent these. They can also measure how stress affects you with a High Sensitivity CRP Test which looks at the inflammation of the arteries.  There are also simpler screenings that assess blood pressure, blood glucose and metabolic rate, these can start from as little as £35.

Having the flexibility to choose a fully comprehensive screening or a more simple check means that health screenings no longer have to be something aimed purely at senior managers.

The backless clinical gowns and trip to a clinic is a thought not relished by many people, but health screenings don't have to be like that.  The screening process can now be completed in the workplace, and the only thing you need to remove is your shoes and socks.

Working with our partner, Prevent plc, PHP can offer a health screening programme that is:

  • Conducted privately, confidentially and very conveniently within a room in your workplace.
  • Delivered by experienced screening practitioners and supported by GPs.
  • Able to provide most of the results including blood tests during the screen, enabling the practitioner to offer expert advice to the specific individual and address any concerns the participant may have.
  • Supplemented by 365 days of telephone medical support.
  • Able to produce anonymous consolidated programme results for the employer along with advice on appropriate issues.

"As people learnt about their body fat, visceral fat, cholesterol and glucose levels, we saw proactive change, with many individuals re-evaluating their life-styles, losing weight and exercising more. In addition, several employees discovered underlying health problems they would not have otherwise known about, such as diabetes, and were able to address these at an early stage ... we have already signed up to repeat the health screening offer to our employees this year!."
